The classic full pay version of Jacks or Better is also known as 9 / 6, a name which is used as shorthand to describe the pay table, more on this below. Several alternative versions of the full pay structure have been introduced to the casino landscape over the last three decades, and each one includes slight variations which directly affect the player’s bottom line. To locate the 9 / 6 full pay game described on this page, simply check the pay tables found near the top of the screen which is a grid with five columns, usually appearing in yellow. If you see 9 in the first column near the words full house and 6 directly underneath for the flush entry, you’re in the right place. If you see any other numbers here, you’ve stumbled upon one of the many Jacks or Better variants which offer slightly worse odds. But when you bet the maximum of five coins, the pay out for a royal flush jumps from the expected 1,250 credits all the way to 4,000. The game of Jacks or Better is renowned for its simplicity, but unlike games of chance like roulette which require no thinking or decision making, video poker rewards you for playing your cards right. The game begins when you deposit funds into a machine of your choosing. Any five cards all in the same suit (2h 4h 8h Jh Ah) It’s worth noting that the expected return percentage varies depending on how many coins you’re playing with. When betting one coin, four coins, or anywhere in between, the expected return is 98.37%. This means you can expect to bring back $98.37 for every $100 wagered. The first real jumps in terms of pay out occur when you make a flush which pays 6 credits or a full house which is good for 9 credits. These figures give 9 / 6 full pay Jacks or Better its name, because by altering these crucial payouts even slightly, casino operators can significantly shrink your expected return. If you’re more familiar with the concept of house edge, simply subtract the expected return rate from 100 to arrive at the house edge for a given pay table. For the first four columns, indicating the less than maximum wagers, the house edge you’ll be up against stands at 1.63 percent which is 100 – 98.37 = 1.63. The expected return offered by a 9 / 6 full pay Jacks or Better machine when you’ve placed the maximum wager of five coins is 99.54%. This is somewhat higher than the return when playing with one to four coins. Two cards of one rank, plus two cards of another rank. (5 5 Q Q X) For the sticky example mentioned above involving the Kd Qd Jd Kh 9d, let’s run through the process and see how it works. We’ve already done step one, so we know you have a high pair, a four card straight flush draw, and a three card royal flush draw. Under step two, we find that the three card royal flush draw is ranked in the 7 th position, the high pair is ranked in 6 th position, and the four card straight flush draw is ranked in 4 th position. According to step three, we should always hold the Kd Qd Jd 9d combination, discarding the Kh and drawing one card. For comparison’s sake, the house edge offered by an American roulette wheel featuring both the 0 and 00 house spaces stands at a whopping 5.26 percent, while many bets in the game of craps jump to an obscene double digit house edge. Conversely, blackjack players applying basic strategy can reduce the house edge in that game to under 0.50 percent. The introduction of Jacks or Better has proven to be a stroke of genius. This is because it’s a game that pays back the player’s original wager when they make one pair of jacks or higher. The reason for this massive; in statistical terms an increase of more than 1 percent is highly significant. The jump in the expected return can be found by moving up to the top of the column. As you may have noticed, all of the pay outs on the table above increase on an incremental basis. In other words, when you double the bet from one coin to two coins, every pay out on the table doubles in kind. Up the ante to four coins, and the pay outs are all quadrupled. A high card is a jack, queen, king, or ace. With this Jacks or Better video poker strategy chart you will be able to start playing perfect video poker, but even perfect play with a perfect jacks or better video poker strategy chart will not assure you beat the casino. This playing strategy will just make the odds of you winning as good as possible. Open Ended Straights are better for the player then a inside straight because there are 8 cards in the stack that can complete them - whereas there are only 4 cards in the stack that can complete a straight with a gap. Achieving theoretical returns I’ve obviously just touched on the surface of what’s involved in winning at video poker. If you want to learn more, there is a ton of good advice available and the specific products that I use in my courses and recommend are in my online and print catalog (www.smartgaming.com). You will have good days and a lot of bad days when you play video poker. That’s normal, because the top-paying royal flush doesn’t occur very frequently (about once very 40,000 or hands or so). So most of the time, your bankroll will go south between one royal and the next. That’s normal and that’s why you must have enough bankroll to get you over the short-term dips that will occur. The decision with the highest expected return is the correct decision. 9/47 x 6 = 114.8% or 115% You are playing Jacks or Better. You get dealt four cards of the same suit and one card off-suit. There are 13 cards of each suit in a deck; you already have 4 of them so that leaves 9 cards that can make your hand. Subtract the 5 cards already in your current hand from 52; that is 52 - 5 = 47. Your odds of making the flush draw is 9/47. Now in Jacks or Better, a flush pays 6 for 1. Multiply it thus: If you have no desire to get quite that serious about learning video poker then I’ll try to provide some general tips to help you out. First, you’ll need to find the machines that offer you the highest returns. One of the best is the 9/6 Jacks or Better machine. Of course, you’re probably wondering "what exactly is a 9/6 Jacks or Better machine?" Well, the Jacks or Better part refers to the fact that you won’t win anything from the machine unless you have at least a pair of Jacks. The 9/6 part refers to the payback schedule on this kind of machine. As stated earlier, each machine can have a different payback schedule and there are at least 20 different kinds of payback schedules available on Jacks or Better machines. In Las Vegas the two most common Jacks or Better machines you will find are 8/5 and 9/6. Here’s a comparison of their pay schedules (per coin, for five-coin play): First, let’s cover the basics. Video poker has virtually the same rules as a game of five card draw poker. The only difference is that you have no opponent to beat and you can’t lose more than your initial bet. First, you deposit from one to five coins in the machine to make your bet. You are then shown five cards on the video screen and your goal is to try to make the best poker hand possible from those cards. Since it is a draw game, you are given one opportunity to improve your hand. This is done by allowing you to discard from one, up to all five cards from your original hand. Of course, you don’t have to discard any if you don’t want to. After choosing which cards you want to keep (by pushing the button below each card), you then push the deal button and the machine will replace all of the other cards with new cards. Based on the resulting final hand the machine will then pay you according to the pay schedule posted on the machine. Naturally, the better your hand, the higher the amount the machine will pay you back. Another good tip is to restrict your play to the same kind of machine all the time. Each video poker machine has its own particular strategy and what works best on a Jacks or Better machine is definitely much different from what works best on a Deuces Wild machine. I only play 9/6 Jacks or Better machines because that is what I practice on and I automatically know the best decision to make all the time. Keep in mind that when you calculate the payback percentage for a video poker machine the number you arrive at is based on perfect play. As an example, a 9/6 Jacks or Better video poker machine has a 99.5 percent payback with perfect play. This means that, theoretically, it will return $99.50 for every $100 played in the machine, but only if the player makes the correct decision every time. If you make mistakes, and most players do, the return to the casino will be higher. If you play several different kinds of machines it becomes increasingly harder to remember the correct play to make and you will make mistakes. Therefore, it only makes sense to memorize the correct decisions for one kind of machine and to always play on that same kind of machine (of course, in order to learn those proper strategies, you may want to buy that book or software). With the second answer we know that the RNG stops when you deposit the first coin, or when you push the bet or deal button. This means that the results will be the same whether we deposit one coin or the maximum coins. Some people think that the outcome will be different depending on how many coins are deposited. This is not true. If you put in one coin and get a royal flush, you would have gotten that same royal flush if you had put in five coins. 1) A low pair is relatively good. Of the 36 possible hands, a low pair is #16 which means there are 20 hands worse than a low pair. If you look at the 15 hands that are better than a low pair eight of them are pat hands that require no draw. Of the other seven hands, six of them are four card hands and the remaining hand is a three-card royal flush. One final point you should keep in mind - IGT is not the only manufacturer of video poker machines. There are quite a few others and they may engineer their machines to work in a different manner. Their RNG may not stop in the same way and their draw cards may be dealt differently. IGT, however, is by far the largest and it is the type of machine you will most often encounter in a casino. (Sorry, but you'll have to buy the book to see the two strategy charts!) 3) Rarely draw to an inside straight. Inside straights (6,7,_,9,10 ) appear only twice on the chart and only in rather bad positions: #30 (with three high cards) and #25 (with four high cards). It is much easier to draw to an outside straight (_7,8,9,10_) where you can complete your straight by getting the card you need on either end. Open end straights appear four times on the chart and in much higher positions than inside straights: #21 (with no high cards), #18 (with one high card), #17 (with two high cards) and #15 (with three high cards).
Okay, who knows the main difference between video poker and slot machines. C’mon now, raise your hands if you think you know it. If you said "a slot machine is a game of luck and video poker is a game of skill" then you are correct! When you play a slot machine there is no decision you can make which will affect the outcome of the game. You put in your money; pull the handle; and hope for the best. In video poker, however, it is your skill in playing the cards which definitely affects the outcome of the game. by Steve Bourie Learn more about the author read more » (Sorry, but you'll have to buy the book to see the 14 different tables!) Although we recommend sticking to the video poker games in the table above, there are certain times when other games may have higher expected returns. One situation where a different game can have a higher payout percentage is when the game has a progressive jackpot that has reached a huge sum. Tons of people come to this page looking for ways to cheat the casinos and rig the video poker machines - that's not what this guide is about. Rather, this page will teach you how to find slight edges and ways to increase your odds so that in the long run you're a small favorite. Don't expect to win tons of money in a short time period. These methods will work, but you have to be patient and be in it for the long haul. The second way to increase your expected value is to play with perfect strategy. Since you can determine the outcome of every situation in video poker, it's easy to determine the correct move in every possible situation. Perfect strategy isn't hard to achieve - you just have to utilize discipline and focus. Casinos make money by instituting a "house edge" into their games. For video poker the house edge usually ranges between 0.3% and 8% depending on the specific game/pay table. What this means is that every time you put a dollar into a video poker machine, you can expect to receive between $0.92 and $0.997 back, depending on the individual machine. This is called the "expected value" - basically, the value you expect to get back out of the machine. If you'd like to learn more about when these games are profitable, check out our progressive video poker machines page. MAKE SURE to never play progressives unless the jackpot is big enough, because without a big jackpot they're a sucker's bet. Analysis and advice for experienced players who have mastered basic strategy, and are looking to add an extra edge to their game.
Calculations and computer program by Bill Butler Single Deck, Jacks or Better Video Poker is one of the more popular slot and online versions of playing poker. There is no bluff factor, and the game is reduced to you, the player, vs. the machine. You are initially dealt 5 cards. Then you discard anywhere from 0 to 5 cards. You then draw from the remaining deck to replace your discards. The value of the resulting poker hand is determined by a “Payoff Table”. A typical “Payoff Table” for a “Jacks or Better” game for each $1.00 bet might look like:
Things get deeper if you draw 2 cards. There are 10 possible ways that you can discard 2 cards and replace them with two other cards from the remaining deck. For each of these ten possible strategies there are COMBIN(47,2) = 1,081 possible card combinations that could be drawn. This time, for each of the 10 strategies, the computer program would generate all 1081 possible draws, evaluate the result, use the “Payoff Table” to find the valuation, add all the payoffs together, and finally divide by COMBIN(47,2) to get the expected value for each of these 10 possible strategies. If you draw 3 cards, the combinations get still deeper. Now for each of the 10 possible strategies, the computer has to check COMBIN(47,3) = 16,215 possible draw combinations. The “Cumulative Return” column gives a running total of these “Expected Returns”. The amount at the bottom of this column shows how much money is returned to the player for each $1.00 game. The 0.9954+ number at the bottom means the player gets back $0.9954 for each dollar bet. The casino keeps the other $1.00 - $0.9954 = $0.0046 per game. Of course, if a player does not use optimal strategy, the casino takes his money at a somewhat faster rate. After you have calculated the expected value for all 32 possible strategies, all you have to do is see which one has the largest “Expected Value”. The strategy with the largest “Expected Value” becomes the “Optimal Strategy” for this particular Poker hand.
Queen Jack 10 9 9 Expected Stand Pat: COMBIN(5,0) x COMBIN(47,0) = 1 All of the above calculations assume that you are playing an “honest game”. It is quite possible the “casino” on the other end of your computer screen is the same person who is going to reward you for helping him get his millions out of “Lower WeWillSuckerYou”. The “Expected Win Probability” column shows the probability that you will have that particular hand if you use “optimal strategy”. The Expected Return” column shows the long term expected “win contribution” for each of these hands. The “Expected Return” is the product of the “Payoff Amount” times the “Expected Win Probability”. The “Expected Win Probability” column shows the probability that after the draw you will end up with that particular hand if you use “optimal strategy”. The Expected Return” column shows the long term expected “win contribution” for each of these hands. The “Expected Return” is the product of the “Payoff Amount” times the “Expected Win Probability”. A computer does not have the “common sense” that humans might have when it comes to evaluating the potential draw combinations for a poker hand. However, computers are very good at running repetitive, simple calculations for a very large number of trials. Thus, to evaluate what cards to hold/draw, a computer does not try to use “common sense”. A computer can only use brute force to generate all possible combinations, make the necessary evaluations for each of these combinations, apply the probability calculations to each of these possible results, and pick the best result. (For the tables in the prior examples, the results were sorted and the 4 best strategies for each are shown.) If you draw 4 cards, there are 5 possible strategies. Each of these has COMBIN(47,4) = 178,365 possible draw combinations. Finally, if you draw 5 cards, there are COMBIN(47,5) = 1,533,939 different draw possibilities. When you’re there sitting in the casino or at home at a machine, you’re there for one reason and one reason only, to play video poker . So, the type of strategy may or may not be obvious, but it always involved calculating the highest expected return for all of the 32 ways it is possible to play a hand according to the highest expected return in video poker. So, as part of having the right strategy in the game you must know how to hold the right cards and discard the right ones always thinking in the long-term. It can be simple or complex, something even as important as drawing the straight or drawing the flush. 12.5 cents – 25 cents = -12.5 cents Video poker strategy resembles basic strategy in blackjack in many ways. They both represent the optimal way of playing every possible hand you could get. Return is usually measured as a percentage. In this case, 12.5 cents is 50% of the original bet, so your expected return is -50%. You’ll keep those over the other options below. You’ll basically be presented with 2 basic strategy charts—one to follow if your hand includes a joker, and one to follow if it doesn’t. The differences are subtle in some cases, but it’s not too complicated. When you’re playing a slot machine, you have no idea what the probability of a particular symbol coming up on a particular reel is. That probability is determined by the random number generator. The correct choice is clear, even though you’re going to lose this bet more often than not. On the occasions when you do win, your winnings are going to be so large that they’ll make up for all the times you lost the bet and then some. The payback percentages for Deuces Wild games are all over the place. Unlike Jacks or Better, which has an easy to understand system for adjusting the payback percentage, Deuces Wild pay tables can vary quite a bit from one another. First check to see if you have one of the following 3 paying hands: If you have any of those, keep it and collect your winnings. But legitimate video poker games duplicate the odds you’d see if you were using a real deck of cards. Those are long term expectations, though. In the short run, anything can happen. But the longer you play, the closer your results will get to the mathematically predicted results. Over an infinite number of trials, you would certainly have results which mirror the mathematical prediction. That’s some strategy advice based on Jacks or Better, but the strategy for Deuces Wild is a little bit different. There are no decisions to be made. You put your money in, your spin the reels, and you accept the outcome. Video poker, on the other hand, resembles blackjack. You can use strategic thinking to improve your chances of winning and decrease the house edge. This shouldn’t be too much of a surprise, as both games use a deck of cards to play. Of course, in the case of blackjack, you’re usually looking at a real deck of cards. In video poker, you’re using a virtual deck that’s actually being simulated using a random number generator. In Deuces Wild, the presence of the wild card makes a huge difference to how you play your hands. You need much stronger hands to win, but those wild cards make it easier to get those hands. One of the fundamental tenets of Deuces Wild strategy is to never discard a deuce. If you just used the same strategy, you’d probably be giving up less than 0.2%. You have 3 cards to a royal flush, but you also have a pair. Do you keep the pair, or do you go for the royal flush? That’s an awful bet. Most experienced gamblers wouldn’t take it. Once you get to that point, you’re looking at speculative hands. Your best speculative hand at this point is 3 cards to a royal flush. It’s a long shot, but if you don’t already have one of the other hands listed above, that’s what you should go for. You can find a video poker strategy chart for just about any variation available. In fact, you can even find websites which will generate the perfect strategy for you based on the game and the pay table that you input. In probability, when you want to know the odds of event A happening AND event B happening at the same time, you multiple the probabilities by each other. Then if you have 4 to a flush, try to fill your flush. This same kind of math can be applied to video poker games and to slot machine games to determine a payback percentage. The payback percentage is just the amount of money you expect to win back from the casino for every $100 you wager over a long period of time. Keep in mind that in the short run, anything can and often will happen. You can win a big jackpot early in your session, and your results won’t look anything like the mathematically expected payback percentage. You may also be interested the following pages. These cover a range of subjects related to video poker strategy. The optimal strategy for Bonus Poker, which offers a bonus payout for 4 of a kind hands, is so similar to the optimal strategy for Jacks or Better as to be almost indistinguishable. A random number generator is a computer program that constantly cycles through numbers at the rate of thousands of numbers per second. Each number corresponds to a different stop on the reel in a slot machine game. Or in the case of a video poker game, each number corresponds to a playing card. You’re playing Jacks or Better, and you have 4 cards to a royal flush, but you also have a pair. You could play this hand in a number of ways. All of that background is necessary for understanding why video poker strategy matters. We offer a full page on Joker Poker, too, which also includes a detailed discussion of the correct strategy for playing that game.
